Aberdeen is the least complicated first base: it concentrates Freetown’s strongest full-service hotel stock, restaurants and beach access while keeping Lumley’s nightlife nearby. It still requires taxis for central sights, but that is true of virtually every comfortable visitor base in this sprawling, traffic-heavy city.

Avoid sleeping near Central Freetown (Tong) after business hours, East End and Kissy, Lumley Beach Road directly beside the busiest bars, Lungi airport-side hotels for a Freetown visit. It is valuable to visit by day but has very limited visitor lodging, heavy daytime congestion and less convenient evening dining and transport than the west-end hotel districts.
