How to eat here
Eat in Ragusa Ibla for the atmospheric evening: the lanes around Piazza Duomo hold the liveliest dining cluster, but avoid choosing solely for a terrace view—some trade on the setting more than the cooking. For everyday Sicilian shopping, bakeries and a less tourist-shaped meal, Via Roma and the San Giovanni side of Ragusa Superiore are the better bet, though the food scene there is less destination-driven.
Scaccia ragusana: a thin, folded and repeatedly layered baked pastry, traditionally filled with tomato and caciocavallo, or ricotta, onion and other seasonal fillings. It is the essential portable Ragusa lunch. · Ragusano DOP: the area’s distinctive stretched-curd cow’s-milk cheese, made in large rectangular forms; seek it in a simple antipasto, melted into scaccia, or with local bread and preserves. · Caciocavallo-style local cheese cookery: Ragusa’s inland dairy country is at its best in direct, unfussy forms rather than elaborate plating. · A Sicilian aperitivo followed by a late dinner in Ibla: make an evening of the old town rather than treating it as a daytime sight stop.
- Reserve for dinner in central Ibla, particularly on weekends and in high season; its best tables are concentrated in a compact historic core and the most scenic terraces fill first.
- Use the terrace test: a view of the Duomo is a fine bonus, not proof of a good kitchen. Read the menu, favor short seasonal offerings and local cheese-led dishes, and be wary of generic tourist combinations.
- For a practical picnic or casual lunch, look for scaccia and cheese in Ragusa Superiore, especially around Via Roma and San Giovanni, where ordinary shops and daily-life food are stronger than in the most photogenic Ibla lanes.
- Lunch is generally the easier time for a quick bakery or trattoria stop; dinner in Sicily commonly starts later than northern-European habits, with 20:00 onward a comfortable target.
- Do not plan a named market visit around uncertain hours: buy from bakeries, salumerias and food shops you encounter instead, especially if you are moving between the two hills.
- Build in the terrain. A long Ibla dinner followed by the climb to Superiore is real exertion; use a taxi or bus if needed rather than assuming the return is a short level walk.
