Old Bight, Columbus Town & Fernandez Bay
Base · 4–5 nights
The best all-round first-visit base: long empty sand, swimmable water and the island’s strongest mix of beach houses, small inns and useful access to the centre. Stay here if you want Cat Island to feel restful rather than logistically demanding.
Mount Alvernia & the Hermitage
Short stop · 1 day
Cat Island’s essential short hike: a steep walk to Father Jerome’s tiny stone Hermitage and the broadest view of the island. It is a worthwhile stop, not a full-day outing—pair it with New Bight or a beach afternoon.
The Bight & New Bight
This is the practical middle of the island, with the more useful airport, fuel and groceries, local food around the fish fry, and the road to Mount Alvernia. Choose it for convenience rather than for a polished beach-town atmosphere.
Port Howe & Greenwood Beach
Base · 3–6 nights
The southeast is for committing to the beach: Greenwood’s huge pink-sand shoreline, dive operations and kite-friendly conditions can easily occupy several days. It is remote enough that staying put is the smart move.
Arthur’s Town
Base · 3–4 nights
The cultural anchor of north Cat Island, Arthur’s Town feels lived-in rather than visitor-built and is the place to connect with Rake ’n’ Scrape and Sidney Poitier associations. It makes more sense as a north-island base than as a quick stop from the south.
Orange Creek & Port Royal
Short stop · 1 day
The island gets rougher and more interesting here: inland tracks, caves, blue-hole country and a landscape that rewards local advice over Google Maps. Come for an exploratory day, not a tightly scheduled attraction circuit.
Smith’s Bay, Tea Bay & Man O’ War Bluff
Short stop · 1 day
A raw central-east coast for side-road wandering, unplanned beach stops and near-total solitude. This is Cat Island at its least structured, best approached from an Old Bight or New Bight base.
French Bay & Hawk’s Nest
Short stop · 1 day
The southern resort-and-marina option, with more organized diving, fishing and watersports than most of the island. It suits travelers who want activity support without giving up Cat Island’s quiet.
Dumfries, Bennett’s Harbour & Hallover
Short stop · 1 day
This central-northern belt is for the slow-drive crowd: farms, small settlements, inland roads and food traditions rather than marquee sights. It works best as part of a north-to-centre transfer or a guided rural day out.
Bain Town & Mermaid Hole
A worthwhile inland detour for Great Lake, better known as Mermaid Hole, and the folklore around Cat Island’s blue-hole landscape. Treat it as a locally checked natural feature, not a managed swimming attraction.
Classic first visit
7 nightsOld Bight, Columbus Town & Fernandez Bay (4 nights) → Port Howe & Greenwood Beach (3 nights)
The sensible first Cat Island trip: start with the island’s easiest beach base, use it for Mount Alvernia, New Bight and one properly long north-island day, then finish on Greenwood’s remote sand. Do not try to squeeze French Bay or another hotel move into this week.
Plan this routeNorth-island culture and beach downtime
8 nightsArthur’s Town (3 nights) → Orange Creek & Port Royal (1 day trip from Arthur’s Town) → Old Bight, Columbus Town & Fernandez Bay (5 nights)
For travelers who want Cat Island’s lived-in north—not just its beaches. Base in Arthur’s Town, explore Orange Creek with local advice, then move south once and give Old Bight enough time for empty-beach days, Mount Alvernia and the central-east coast. This is the right shape for a Rake ’n’ Scrape Festival trip.
Plan this routeGreenwood dive and beach week
6 nightsPort Howe & Greenwood Beach (6 nights) → Mount Alvernia & the Hermitage (1 full-day excursion from Port Howe & Greenwood Beach)
A specialist itinerary for oceanic-whitetip diving, kiteboarding or doing very little on a very long beach. Keep the whole stay at Greenwood and leave weather buffers around dive days; Mount Alvernia is the one inland outing worth the drive. It is deliberately not a comprehensive island tour.
Plan this routeThe full Cat Island at a humane pace
14 nightsArthur’s Town (4 nights) → Orange Creek & Port Royal (1 day trip from Arthur’s Town) → Dumfries, Bennett’s Harbour & Hallover (Transfer-day exploration en route south) → Old Bight, Columbus Town & Fernandez Bay (5 nights) → Mount Alvernia & the Hermitage (Half-day excursion from Old Bight, Columbus Town & Fernandez Bay) → Smith’s Bay, Tea Bay & Man O’ War Bluff (1 day trip from Old Bight, Columbus Town & Fernandez Bay) → Port Howe & Greenwood Beach (5 nights) → French Bay & Hawk’s Nest (1 day trip from Port Howe & Greenwood Beach) → Bain Town & Mermaid Hole (Short locally checked detour during the central-to-south transfer)
This is the version that respects Cat Island’s distances and slow logistics: a real north base, a genuinely useful central beach base, then a proper southeast stay. The minor stops are excursions, not excuses to repack; you still have enough unplanned beach time for the island to work its particular magic.
