Plovdiv
Base · 1–4 days
The province’s indispensable base: spend two full days on the Roman Theatre, Stadium and Basilica, the Old Town’s Revival houses, and Kapana after dark. It has enough real city life, food and evening culture that it should not be treated as a one-night stop.
Asenovgrad, Asen’s Fortress & Bachkovo
Base · 2 days
The best southern day trip from Plovdiv pairs the cliff-top church at Asen’s Fortress with Bachkovo Monastery’s frescoes, refectory and lived-in Orthodox atmosphere. Prioritize the fortress and monastery over Asenovgrad town itself, and go early before coach groups arrive.
Hisarya & Starosel
Base · 2–3 days
Hisarya’s intact Roman walls, parkland and mineral-water hotels make it the province’s easiest overnight reset; nearby Starosel adds a serious Thracian sanctuary rather than a token archaeological stop. Stay one night unless spa treatments are the point of the trip.
Karlovo, Sopot & Banya
Base · 2 days
This western Rose Valley belt combines Karlovo’s rose and National Revival heritage, Sopot’s literary and mountain-rim character, and Banya’s mineral-water hotels. Come in late spring for roses only if you accept crowds; outside harvest season, treat it as a quiet culture-and-spa stop rather than a flower spectacle.
Kalofer & the Central Balkan edge
Kalofer has a more convincingly mountain-facing feel than Karlovo and works well as a quieter add-on for National Revival history and walks. It is not a polished resort: use it when you have a car, sound weather judgment and interest in the Balkan foothills.
Perushtitsa & Brestovitsa wine country
Base · 1–2 days
This is the place to pursue mavrud properly, with vineyard villages and appointment-led tastings in the western foothills southwest of Plovdiv. It works as a deliberate car day or overnight, not as a casual public-transport detour; appoint a driver if tasting at more than one estate.
The Rhodope foothills: Kuklen, Markovo, Hrabrino, Belintash & Mostovo
Base · 1–2 days
For rougher roads, wooded slopes, village meals and a break from Roman and Thracian sites, head into the province’s southern foothills. Belintash is the headline rock sanctuary, but the appeal is the unruly landscape rather than a tightly packaged attraction circuit.
Classic city and southern corridor — no car
4 days / 3 nightsPlovdiv (4 days, using one full day for the Asenovgrad/Bachkovo excursion)
The right first visit if you do not have a car. Give Plovdiv two unhurried full days, then use a guided trip or public transport for the fortress and monastery. Do not dilute this with Karlovo or Hisarya: on a short transit-dependent trip, they are a bad use of time.

6-7 daysPlovdiv (4 days) → Hisarya & Starosel (2-3 days)
For travelers who want the province’s best balance of urban culture and actual downtime. Base in Plovdiv for its Roman core, Old Town and southern day trip, then slow down in Hisarya; reserve Starosel for a car or taxi day rather than pretending it is an easy walk from the spa hotels.
Plan this routeNorthern plain and Rose Valley circuit — rental car
9 days / 8 nightsPlovdiv (3 days) → Hisarya & Starosel (2 days) → Karlovo, Sopot & Banya (2 days) → Plovdiv (2 days)
A sensible first regional road trip: start with Plovdiv, move north for Roman walls and Thracian archaeology, then continue to the mountain-rim towns for roses, history and spa time. The final Plovdiv nights make the return easy and leave room for a proper meal instead of a rushed departure. Go in late May or June only if the rose crowds are part of the deal you want.

11-12 daysPlovdiv (3 days) → Perushtitsa & Brestovitsa wine country (1-2 days) → Asenovgrad, Asen’s Fortress & Bachkovo (2 days) → The Rhodope foothills: Kuklen, Markovo, Hrabrino, Belintash & Mostovo (1-2 days) → Hisarya & Starosel (2 days) → Karlovo, Sopot & Banya (2 days) → Plovdiv (1 day)
For repeat Bulgaria travelers with a car who would rather linger over mavrud, monastery country and foothill roads than tick off every museum. Book winery visits in advance, keep tasting days separate from driving, and treat the Rhodope foothills as a landscape day—not a tightly timed attraction circuit.
