Downtown Cairo, Tahrir and Garden City
Base · 1–2 days
The most practical first base: the Egyptian Museum at Tahrir, old cafés, battered belle-époque streets and strong metro access. Garden City is quieter and better for larger hotels, while Downtown has the sharper everyday-city energy.
Gezira and Zamalek
Short stop · 1 day
The easiest central neighborhood to live in for a few days, with better dining, galleries, bars and Nile-side evenings than much of the center. Use it as a comfortable base, then leave it to see the harder-edged historic city.
Islamic Cairo: Al-Muizz, Khan el-Khalili, Al-Azhar and the Citadel
Base · 1–2 days
Cairo's essential architecture day: monumental mosques, medieval lanes, market chaos and the Citadel's fortress complex. Start early, move deliberately, and do not try to cram every mosque and bazaar into one overheated afternoon.
Old Cairo, Coptic Cairo and Fustat
Short stop · 1 day
The best corrective to a pharaohs-and-mosques-only version of Cairo, with Roman Babylon, Coptic churches, Ben Ezra Synagogue, Amr ibn al-As Mosque and NMEC. It is spread out, so pair Coptic Cairo and Fustat by car rather than expecting one continuous stroll.
Manial and Roda Island
Short stop · 1 day
A quieter southern Nile detour for Manial Palace's unusually intimate royal interiors and the Roda Nilometer. It earns a half-day when combined with Old Cairo, not a separate hotel move.
Heliopolis and Korba
Short stop · 1 day
A planned early-20th-century suburb with the restored Baron Empain Palace, arcaded Korba streets and less tourist-scripted eating. Good for a final airport-adjacent night, but too far from the historic core for a short first stay.
Northern Cemetery / City of the Dead
Short stop · 1 day
The Mamluk funerary architecture, especially around Qaytbay, is exceptional, but this is a living and sensitive urban landscape rather than a spectacle. Go with a knowledgeable local guide and give the area the seriousness it requires.
Maadi
Short stop · 1 day
A leafy southern residential district for slower stays, cafés and calm evenings rather than headline sights. It works for a week or more; for a three-night first trip, its distance from the historic core is a bad trade.
New Cairo and the New Administrative Capital
Short stop · 1 day
Car-dependent eastern expansion of compounds, universities, business districts and the new government capital. Visit only for business, family or a specific interest in contemporary Egyptian urbanism; it should not displace historic Cairo on a first trip.
Cairo Governorate essentials
4 daysDowntown Cairo, Tahrir and Garden City (1 day) → Islamic Cairo: Al-Muizz, Khan el-Khalili, Al-Azhar and the Citadel (1 day) → Old Cairo, Coptic Cairo and Fustat (1 day) → Gezira and Zamalek (1 day)
The right first visit inside Cairo Governorate. Base centrally, give Islamic Cairo a full day rather than treating it as a market stop, then balance it with Old Cairo and a slower Zamalek evening.
Plan this routeTwo-day Cairo stopover
2 full daysDowntown Cairo, Tahrir and Garden City (1 day) → Gezira and Zamalek (evening on day 1) → Islamic Cairo: Al-Muizz, Khan el-Khalili, Al-Azhar and the Citadel (1 day)
For travelers with no time to fake completeness. Do the Tahrir museum-and-Downtown day, eat and sleep in Zamalek, then commit the second day to the medieval core and Citadel.
Plan this routeSix-day history and architecture route
6 daysDowntown Cairo, Tahrir and Garden City (1 day) → Islamic Cairo: Al-Muizz, Khan el-Khalili, Al-Azhar and the Citadel (1 day) → Old Cairo, Coptic Cairo and Fustat (1 day) → Manial and Roda Island (1 day) → Heliopolis and Korba (1 day) → Northern Cemetery / City of the Dead (1 day)
A proper six-day version for travelers who care about Cairo's built layers, not just its headline monuments. Keep one central hotel base, use cars for the southern and eastern days, and take a knowledgeable guide for the Northern Cemetery.
Plan this routeTen-day slower Cairo, including the urban fringe
10 daysDowntown Cairo, Tahrir and Garden City (2 days) → Gezira and Zamalek (1 day) → Islamic Cairo: Al-Muizz, Khan el-Khalili, Al-Azhar and the Citadel (2 days) → Old Cairo, Coptic Cairo and Fustat (1 day) → Manial and Roda Island (1 day) → Heliopolis and Korba (1 day) → Northern Cemetery / City of the Dead (1 day) → Maadi (half-day evening visit) → New Cairo and the New Administrative Capital (half-day visit)
For repeat visitors or urbanists who want Cairo at a sane pace. Split Islamic Cairo across two days, leave room for cafés and galleries, and treat Maadi and the eastern new cities as specific-interest detours rather than mandatory sightseeing.
