This guide treats “Tuscania, 07” as Tuscany/Toscana, not the separate town of Tuscania in Lazio. Tuscany is a large working region of art cities, vineyard hills, farm country, coast and islands—not a single wine-country loop. Florence is essential for Renaissance art and rail travel, but Siena, Lucca, Pisa, Chianti, Val d’Orcia, Maremma and Elba each demand a different pace and, often, a car.
The mental map
Think in four usable zones: Florence and the rail-connected north/central art cities; Siena, Chianti and the central hills; southern Tuscany around Val d’Orcia and Maremma; then the coast and islands, including Elba. Florence–Pisa–Lucca–Siena–Arezzo work reasonably without a car; the Tuscany of Pienza, Montalcino, Volterra, Chianti villages, Maremma and most beaches does not. Avoid driving and parking in Florence and Siena’s historic cores, then collect a car when you leave them.
When to go
May to mid-June is the strongest first-trip window: green countryside, reliable openings and manageable heat, though Florence and the headline hill towns are busy. September and October are nearly as good and better for wine, food and walking; summer is hot inland and expensive on the coast, while winter works for city art and eating but not for the rural postcard experience. Avoid assuming Easter is quiet, and do not casually book Siena around the July 2 or August 16 Palio.
Pacing a visit
For five to seven nights, choose Florence plus rail day trips if museums and cities are the priority. Seven to 10 nights merits two bases—Florence plus Siena, Chianti or Val d’Orcia—and 10 to 14 nights can support a third stop in the south or on the coast. Treat transfers as real travel days: Florence–Siena takes roughly 1¼–1½ hours by direct coach or 1½–2 hours by train, Siena–Val d’Orcia is about an hour by car, and Florence–Pienza is closer to 2½ hours by car.
Don't miss
1
Centro Storico di Tuscania
Tuscania’s compact, largely intact medieval center is the reason to make the stop: stone lanes, small squares, towers, and unusually broad views over the countryside. Wander it between the two major Romanesque churches rather than treating it as a drive-by backdrop.
2
Church of San Pietro
This hilltop Romanesque basilica, with its extraordinarily detailed façade and stark, atmospheric interior, is Tuscania’s defining monument. Combine it with the walk up through the old town and allow time to take in the setting as much as the church itself.
3
Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Tuscania
Housed in the former convent of Santa Maria del Riposo, this is the compact primer on the Etruscan material found around Tuscania: sarcophagi, sculpture, ceramics, and funerary objects. Use it before or after the local necropolises, when the objects have archaeological context rather than being just a handsome collection.
4
Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore
San Pietro gets more attention, but Santa Maria Maggiore is its essential counterpart: another major Romanesque basilica with a richly carved façade and a quieter, more contemplative interior. It completes the architectural case for Tuscania as one of northern Lazio’s strongest medieval stops.
5
Parco Naturalistico Archeologico di Vulci
Vulci is the region’s big Etruscan day out: a substantial ancient city in open countryside, with tombs, ruins, a museum in the castle, and the dramatic Ponte della Badia over the Fiora. Give it the better part of a day rather than trying to bolt it onto a quick Tuscania walk.

Where to go
Florence
The essential Renaissance city: give the Uffizi, Duomo complex, Accademia, Oltrarno and major churches real time rather than treating them as a checklist. It is Tuscany’s strongest no-car base, but a bad place to keep a rental car.

Siena
A compact medieval city with the Campo, a knockout cathedral and enough local life to justify more than a day trip. It is the practical hinge between Florence and the southern countryside.

Chianti Classico
The Florence–Siena vineyard country for winery visits, long lunches and agriturismo stays; use Greve, Panzano, Radda or Castellina as practical anchors. Stay overnight if you plan to drink—this is not a satisfying self-guided Florence day trip without a car.

Val d'Orcia
Base in or near Pienza or Montalcino and drive to Montepulciano, San Quirico and Bagno Vignoni at an unhurried pace. This is the postcard landscape, but it needs a car and at least two or three nights to avoid becoming windshield tourism.

Lucca
A walled city best experienced on foot or by bicycle, with a calmer evening rhythm than Florence and enough texture for two nights. It pairs naturally with Pisa but is the better place to sleep.

Pisa
The Piazza dei Miracoli and leaning tower are worth the stop, especially if you climb the tower; budget a half-day rather than writing off the city entirely. It is easy to combine with Lucca by train or as an arrival/departure stop.

San Gimignano and Val d'Elsa
San Gimignano’s tower skyline is genuinely striking, but its center is packed in the middle of the day. Use it as a morning or late-afternoon stop alongside Volterra, Certaldo, Monteriggioni or Siena rather than making it your main base.

Maremma and Argentario
Southwest Tuscany trades Renaissance crowds for tufa towns, thermal water, beaches, wetlands and seafood. Base around Grosseto, Pitigliano, Saturnia, Orbetello or Argentario, and bring a car—distances make public transport impractical.

Elba
Tuscany’s best proper sea break: coves, hiking, small ports and enough variety to justify four nights. Treat it as a destination reached via Piombino, not a ferry day trip squeezed between museums.

Arezzo and Cortona
Arezzo supplies serious art and an easier-going town base; Cortona adds steep stone lanes and Valdichiana views. This is eastern Tuscany for travelers who want Piero della Francesca and Etruscan atmosphere without Florence-level crowds.

Livorno and the Etruscan Coast
Come for Livorno’s market and cacciucco, then continue to the beaches and pinewoods around Castiglioncello, Vada, San Vincenzo and Piombino. It is a working, maritime alternative to polished inland Tuscany.
