1Watamu, Turtle Bay and Watamu Marine Park
Base · 4–5 days
The strongest all-round base on the North Coast: reef trips, protected lagoons, diving and an easy concentration of small beach hotels. It is the obvious first choice if the sea is the point of the trip.

2Mida Creek, Dabaso and Gede
Watamu’s essential inland counterweight: tide-dependent mangroves and birdlife at Mida Creek, plus the atmospheric Swahili ruins of Gede. Do these together rather than treating Watamu as beach-only.

3Kilifi Town, Bofa Beach and Mnarani
Base · 3 days
A quieter, less packaged base built around Kilifi Creek, broad Bofa Beach and the compact Mnarani ruins. Stay creek-side or at Bofa; the central town itself is practical rather than scenic.

4Arabuko-Sokoke Forest
The coastal forest behind Watamu and Gede is the right break from sand for guided walks, rare-habitat birding and butterflies. Go with a guide and interest in ecology, not expectations of safari-style wildlife sightings.

5Malindi and Shella
Base · 1–2 days
A real trading town with Swahili and Portuguese history, Italian-influenced restaurants and a useful domestic airport. It has more services and dining than Watamu, but a more uneven, commercial beach feel.

6Mambrui, Marafa and Magarini
The drier rural north is worth a half-day for Mambrui’s dunes and Marafa’s erosion-carved sandstone gullies, best in late-afternoon light. Use Malindi as the base rather than sleeping here unless you are self-driving with a specific reason.

7Vipingo and Kuruwitu
Base · 2 days
A polished southern-coast stretch for villas, golf and a quieter setting than Mtwapa, with limited air access through Vipingo. It is deliberately gated and expensive, not a village-life destination.

8Mtwapa and Kikambala
The practical southern gateway for short beach extensions, Mtwapa Creek and a livelier evening scene near Mombasa. Expect traffic and roadside development rather than Kilifi County’s signature remote-coast atmosphere.

9Takaungu
A small Swahili creek settlement north of Kilifi that makes a worthwhile quiet detour from a Kilifi base. It is best with a private driver and does not merit several nights for most travelers.

4 daysWatamu, Turtle Bay and Watamu Marine Park (4 days)
The cleanest first taste of Kilifi County. Base yourself in Watamu for a reef day, then use local day trips for Mida Creek, Gede or Arabuko-Sokoke rather than wasting a short break changing hotels.

8 daysKilifi Town, Bofa Beach and Mnarani (3 days) → Watamu, Turtle Bay and Watamu Marine Park (4 days) → Malindi and Shella (1 day)
For travelers who want both sides of the county: Kilifi’s quieter creek-and-beach rhythm, then Watamu’s stronger marine and heritage offering. Keep Malindi to one final night only if its airport makes the departure easier; otherwise give that night back to Watamu.

12 daysVipingo and Kuruwitu (2 days) → Kilifi Town, Bofa Beach and Mnarani (3 days) → Watamu, Turtle Bay and Watamu Marine Park (5 days) → Malindi and Shella (2 days)
For a patient traveler with private transfers or a self-drive car. Vipingo gives you a soft landing, Kilifi supplies creek life and a Takaungu detour, Watamu gets enough time for two weather windows on the water, and Malindi is the base for town history plus a Marafa sunset trip.

6 daysWatamu, Turtle Bay and Watamu Marine Park (4 days) → Malindi and Shella (2 days)
The sensible route for Malindi Airport users. Put the beach-and-reef days first in Watamu, then finish in Malindi for its restaurants, heritage sights and either Mambrui or Marafa—without an unnecessary final transfer back south.
