1Marrakech
Base · 2–3 nights
The essential first stop for a reason: medina intensity, riads, food, hammams and strong hotel choices. Give it two full days, then leave before the sales pitch and traffic become the whole trip.

High Atlas and kasbah route
2High Atlas and kasbah route
Short stop · 1 night
The road south from Marrakech earns its place with Amazigh villages, Tizi n’Tichka, Aït Benhaddou, Skoura palms, Dades and Todra gorges. It is spectacular but slow; treat it as a road trip, not a day-tour backdrop.

Merzouga and Erg Chebbi
3Merzouga and Erg Chebbi
Base · 2 nights
This is the accessible version of a real Sahara dune experience: big orange sand, dark skies and desert camps. It is worth doing only if you can absorb the long approach and exit without pretending they are quick transfers.

4Fes
Base · 2–3 nights
Morocco’s deepest medina for craft, architecture and lived-in urban texture, with less polish and more substance than Marrakech. Stay long enough to get lost slowly rather than trying to conquer it in an afternoon.

Meknes and Volubilis
5Meknes and Volubilis
Short stop · 1 night
A calmer imperial-city counterpoint to Fes, paired naturally with Morocco’s best Roman ruins at Volubilis. It works best as an overnight or deliberate extra day, not a rushed detour between trains.

6Tangier
Base · 2 nights
A strait-facing port city with Spanish and Andalusian edges, café culture and a useful sense of arrival from Europe. It feels markedly more Mediterranean than Marrakech or Fes.

7Chefchaouen and the Rif
Base · 1–2 nights
Chefchaouen’s blue lanes are genuinely striking, but the real appeal is the Rif setting and cooler mountain air. One night is usually enough in town; getting there breaks the otherwise easy northern rail route.

8Rabat
Base · 2 nights
The capital is composed, walkable and refreshingly low-pressure after the big medinas. Choose it for the kasbah, Hassan Tower and a more contemporary, local-paced Morocco.

9Casablanca
Short stop · 0–1 nights
Come for the Hassan II Mosque and use it intelligently as the country’s main air-and-rail hub. Beyond that, it is a working metropolis rather than a romantic medina stop, so one night is generally enough.

10Essaouira
Base · 2 nights
The best antidote to Marrakech: a manageable medina, working fishing harbor, strong seafood and Atlantic wind. It is for rampart walks and kitesurfing more than languid, sheltered beach days.

11Agadir, Taghazout and the Souss coast
This is Morocco’s practical beach-and-surf coast: reliable winter swell, beach hotels and easy logistics. Pick it for surf or family downtime, not for the historic texture found in Fes or Marrakech.

Anti-Atlas and Taroudant
12Anti-Atlas and Taroudant
A quieter southern interior of walled towns, argan country, saffron landscapes and granite hills around Tafraoute. It is a better second-trip road journey than the standard Marrakech-to-Merzouga convoy, but really needs a car or driver.

Marrakech, Atlas and Atlantic reset
7 nightsMarrakech (3 nights) → Essaouira (2 nights) → Marrakech (2 nights)
The right short first trip: Marrakech for the full urban hit, Essaouira to decompress, then back for departure or an Atlas day trip. It skips Fes and the Sahara rather than turning a week into a sequence of transfers.

9-10 nightsMarrakech (3 nights) → High Atlas and kasbah route (1 night) → Merzouga and Erg Chebbi (2 nights) → Fes (3 nights) → Casablanca (0-1 night)
For travelers who specifically want dunes as well as Morocco’s two heavyweight medinas. The Atlas stop makes the southern drive worthwhile, but this is emphatically a road trip: Merzouga to Fes consumes most of a day, and several days are about getting somewhere rather than lingering.

8-10 nightsCasablanca (1 night) → Rabat (2 nights) → Tangier (2 nights) → Chefchaouen and the Rif (1-2 nights) → Fes (2-3 nights)
The cleanest route for rail-minded travelers and anyone arriving from Spain. High-speed rail makes the Casablanca–Rabat–Tangier spine easy; Chefchaouen is the necessary break in that logic, requiring road transport before the route reconnects with Fes.

This is the first itinerary long enough to show Morocco’s real shifts: Mediterranean north, imperial medinas, rail-linked central cities, then the slow mountain-and-desert south. Keep Essaouira out of it; adding the coast without cutting a city or the Sahara makes the country feel like a transport challenge.
