Port Harcourt
Base · 3–14 days
The only sensible independent base in Rivers State: use Old GRA or GRA Phase 2 for hotels and logistics, then make daytime forays for parks, restaurants and bole-and-fish in D-Line or Elekahia. It is traffic-heavy and vehicle-dependent, but it is the place to stay rather than attempt a state-wide circuit.
Choba
Short stop · 1 day
Port Harcourt’s university-side northern edge, useful for University of Port Harcourt connections and a less polished view of everyday metro life. It is worthwhile mainly with an academic, family or local-host reason; traffic can make a short map distance a long outing.
Eleme and Onne
Base · 1–2 days
The industrial port and petrochemical belt east of Port Harcourt explains much of the state’s economy better than any museum could. This is for a specific hosted business or professional visit, not casual sightseeing.
Okrika
A historic riverine town close to Port Harcourt, with fishing, trade and Ijaw-linked delta culture at its core. Do not treat it as an independent day trip under current security guidance; consider it only with credible local hosting and an immediate reassessment of conditions.
Bonny Island and Finima
Rivers State’s strongest potential second destination: a historic island kingdom and LNG hub with mangroves, waterways and coastal scenery. It is not a spontaneous boat excursion—go only through an established host with confirmed daytime transport, current security clearance and valid insurance.
Opobo-Nkoro
A historic riverine kingdom associated with King Jaja and the palm-oil trade, with real depth for researchers and visitors with family ties. Waterway dependence and current security conditions make it a relationship-based visit, not a conventional Port Harcourt add-on.
Andoni and Oyorokoto
Southern fishing-and-coast country, particularly important for seafood and Andoni-style native soup traditions. The Atlantic-facing landscape is appealing in theory, but this is not responsible independent beach tourism under current conditions.
Ahoada and Omoku
The inland, road-connected side of Rivers State, more relevant to family, agriculture and business than leisure tourism. Neither town belongs on an independent visitor’s itinerary while travel outside Port Harcourt remains inadvisable.
Port Harcourt first visit
3 days / 2 nightsPort Harcourt (3 days)
The only sensible standalone leisure break: stay in Old GRA or GRA Phase 2, do a controlled daytime city outing, and make one properly guided bole-and-fish stop. Do not dilute this with an improvised riverine day trip.

5 days / 4 nightsPort Harcourt (4 days) → Choba (1 day)
For visitors with local contacts who want more than hotel-compound Port Harcourt. Keep Port Harcourt as the base for food, parks, meetings and downtime; use Choba only for a University of Port Harcourt, family or academic-host visit, allowing generously for traffic.

7-10 daysPort Harcourt (6-8 days) → Eleme and Onne (1-2 days)
For energy-sector, port or professional travelers with confirmed appointments and transport. Port Harcourt remains the hotel base; Eleme and Onne are a tightly managed hosted visit, not a sightseeing detour or a reason to self-drive.
Plan this routeExtended host-led Rivers stay
10-14 daysPort Harcourt (10-14 days)
The right longer stay for work, family events or vetted cultural engagements. Use one secure Port Harcourt base and let real local relationships shape the schedule; do not turn extra days into a Bonny, Opobo-Nkoro or Andoni circuit.
