Bergen
Base · 1–2 nights
The indispensable start: Bryggen, serious museums, good restaurants and Fløyen give a fjord trip some urban substance. It is also the only base that works well without a car and without good weather.
Flåm, Aurland, Gudvangen and Nærøyfjord
Base · 2 nights
This is the efficient classic-fjord circuit: the Flåm Railway, then a boat through Aurlandsfjord and the much tighter Nærøyfjord. Flåm is busy and commercial; sleep in Aurland if you want the scenery without the day-trip crush.
Hardanger
Base · 2 nights
Vestland’s best food-and-landscape section, built around orchards, cider farms, waterfalls and long fjord arms. Base in Ulvik for cider, Lofthus for Sørfjorden views and orchard walks, or Eidfjord for Vøringsfossen and the plateau.
Voss
Short stop · 1 night
A practical mountain-and-lake stop on the Bergen Railway, with the gondola straight from the station and enough rafting, biking and hiking to justify a night or two. Choose it for activities and connections, not village charm.
Odda, Tyssedal and Trolltunga
Base · 3 nights
The place to stay when Trolltunga is the point of the trip. Odda is functional rather than pretty, but it lets you give the hike a full day plus a weather buffer instead of treating a demanding 8–12-hour outing as a side trip.
Sognefjord
Base · 3 nights
Go beyond Flåm here: Balestrand has the best atmosphere, Sogndal has services, and Luster or Skjolden puts you closest to dramatic side fjords and glacier approaches. It rewards several nights and a car, not a rushed overnight.
Nordfjord: Loen, Olden and Stryn
Base · 3 nights
The high-impact mountain section: turquoise glacier lakes, steep walls and Loen Skylift for an easy high-alpine day. Use Loen or Olden for scenery and Stryn for practical services; a rental car is close to essential.
Sunnfjord: Fjærland and Jølster
Base · 2 nights
A quieter glacier-and-lake alternative to the marquee fjord stops. Fjærland combines glacier scenery with a small bookish village, while Jølster is better for lake drives, waterfalls and slowing the itinerary down.
Sunnhordland: Rosendal and the islands
Rosendal is the standout for fjord-and-mountain scale without Flåm-level crowds, while Stord, Bømlo and Tysnes suit a deliberately slow car-and-ferry detour. This is a south-of-Bergen section to commit to, not squeeze into a day trip.
Bergen's coast and islands
Øygarden, Osterøy and Nordhordland offer windier coastal walks, fishing settlements and craft or industrial-history stops rather than vertical fjords. Use it as a contrast day from Bergen if you have a car; do not sacrifice a first fjord overnight for it.
Classic first visit, no car
6 days / 5 nightsBergen (2 nights) → Flåm, Aurland, Gudvangen and Nærøyfjord (2 nights) → Bergen (1 night)
The cleanest short introduction: Bergen gives you culture and weather-proof options, while the Flåm Railway and Nærøyfjord deliver the essential fjord experience without renting a car. The final Bergen night is sensible insurance before an early flight.
Plan this routeCity, mountain and cider country
10 days / 9 nightsBergen (2 nights) → Voss (1 night) → Flåm, Aurland, Gudvangen and Nærøyfjord (2 nights) → Hardanger (2 nights) → Bergen (2 nights)
Best first self-drive route for travelers who want contrast rather than a checklist. Voss breaks up the journey with actual outdoor activities; Flåm covers the famous narrow fjord; Hardanger slows things down with orchards, cider and waterfalls. Base in Ulvik or Lofthus rather than trying to cover all of Hardanger.
Plan this routeTrolltunga with recovery built in
11 days / 10 nightsBergen (2 nights) → Odda, Tyssedal and Trolltunga (3 nights) → Hardanger (2 nights) → Flåm, Aurland, Gudvangen and Nærøyfjord (2 nights) → Bergen (1 night)
For fit hikers who understand that Trolltunga needs a full day and a weather buffer. Odda is a practical hiking base, not a scenic finale; Hardanger is where you recover properly before moving on to the very different rail-and-fjord world around Flåm.
Plan this routeDeep fjords and glacier country
15 days / 14 nightsBergen (2 nights) → Voss (1 night) → Flåm, Aurland, Gudvangen and Nærøyfjord (2 nights) → Sognefjord (3 nights) → Nordfjord: Loen, Olden and Stryn (3 nights) → Sunnfjord: Fjærland and Jølster (2 nights) → Bergen (1 night)
The right long car route for travelers who want to get beyond the headline loop. Give Sognefjord time for Balestrand or Luster, use Loen or Olden for glacier lakes and high-mountain views, then break the southern return in quieter Fjærland or Jølster. Do not add Hardanger or Trolltunga unless you have another week.
