Recuay
Base · 1–2 nights
The best base for the province’s human side: adobe-and-tile streets, bread ovens, the Burgos neighborhood and a properly lived-in highland-town atmosphere. Use it for a gentle first day at altitude rather than treating it as a polished sightseeing city.
Pastoruri Glacier and Carpa Sector
Short stop · 1 day
The province’s defining high-altitude day out combines a retreating glacier, stark puna, wetlands and roadside geology inside Huascarán National Park. Go after acclimatizing: the glacier walk reaches roughly 5,240 m, and the road stops are as worthwhile as the ice.
Cátac
Base · 2–4 nights
A functional, no-frills base that cuts down the early start for Pastoruri and puts Patococha, Pumapampa and Conococha within reach. Stay here for efficient access to the highlands, not for town atmosphere.
Patococha and Pumapampa
Short stop · 0.5–1 days
These wetlands, lagoon viewpoints and mineral-spring stops make the Cátac–Pastoruri road feel like a full excursion rather than a transfer to a glacier parking lot. A private driver is worth it here; group tours tend to rush every stop.
Conococha Plateau and Lagoon
Short stop · 0.5–1 days
A wide, exposed wetland landscape near the Santa River’s source, with waterfowl and occasional Andean wildlife rather than a single blockbuster view. It is the better choice for travelers who prefer quiet ecosystems to tour-bus scenery.
Antacocha and Pampacancha
Short stop · 1 day
The Cordillera Negra side’s strongest landscape: a high lake, open puna and broad views across the Santa Valley toward the Cordillera Blanca. It is quieter and less packaged than Pastoruri, but requires pre-arranged transport and flexible expectations.
Ticapampa
Short stop · 1 night
A mining-and-ranching valley town that earns a stop mainly during its July Pisco Sour gathering or October Virgen del Pilar festivities. Outside those dates, it is a useful pause on the valley road rather than a destination in its own right.
Huáncash Archaeological Hill
Short stop · 0.5 days
A modest Recuay-culture site with stone structures and ceramics, worthwhile if you have a specific archaeological interest and local guidance. Do not expect museum-level interpretation, reliable signage or visitor facilities.
Cotaparaco, Pararín and Llacllín
Base · 2 nights
Remote western districts for agricultural landscapes, village life and routes untouched by conventional tourism. This is a deliberately slow add-on for travelers with a Spanish-speaking driver or strong local contacts, not an improvised day trip.
Classic first visit
3 nightsRecuay (1 night) → Cátac (2 nights) → Pastoruri Glacier and Carpa Sector (1 full day) → Patococha and Pumapampa (part of the Pastoruri day) → Conococha Plateau and Lagoon (half day)
The sensible short version: sleep first in Recuay to ease into the altitude, then use Cátac as the practical base for the province’s best highland scenery. Do not treat Pastoruri as a quick arrival-day stop; its altitude is the whole challenge.

For travelers who want more than the glacier. Recuay provides the town life and bakeries; Antacocha gives the Cordillera Negra its proper day; Cátac handles the big highland outings. Ticapampa is worth the overnight chiefly during a festival—otherwise make it a brief valley-road stop.

4 nightsCátac (4 nights) → Conococha Plateau and Lagoon (1 full day) → Patococha and Pumapampa (half day) → Pastoruri Glacier and Carpa Sector (1 full day)
A single-base route for birders, photographers and travelers who would rather linger in wetlands and puna than change hotels. Give Conococha a full unhurried day, then make the Pastoruri road trip about Patococha and Pumapampa as much as the glacier itself.

This is for repeat visitors with a trusted Spanish-speaking driver, not a first independent trip. It combines the accessible spine with the western districts, where transport is thin and plans need slack. Keep one of the rural days flexible for weather, roads or local arrangements.
