1Lisbon Historic Neighborhoods
Base · 2–5 days
Base yourself here for Baixa, Chiado, Alfama, Mouraria, Graça, Bairro Alto and Príncipe Real—the core mix of viewpoints, tiled streets, fado, restaurants and late nights. Central Lisbon is the right first base because Sintra and Cascais are easy rail day trips from it.

2Belém, Ajuda and Alcântara
Lisbon’s riverside monument district is where to concentrate the Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower area and major museums. Go early for Jerónimos, then carry on into Ajuda or Alcântara rather than losing a whole day to monument queues.

3Sintra
Base · 1–2 days
A wooded palace town with Pena, the Moorish Castle, Quinta da Regaleira and Monserrate—an essential Lisbon-side trip, but one that rewards restraint. Pick two major sights in a day; trying to do them all turns the visit into bus queues and timed-entry stress.

4Cascais and Estoril
Short stop · 1 day
The easiest seaside escape from Lisbon, with a direct coastal train, walkable waterfront and convenient small beaches. It works well as a day trip or as a calmer final base, though the center is polished and pricey rather than especially wild or local.

5Sintra Coast
Colares, Azenhas do Mar, Praia das Maçãs and Cabo da Roca deliver the cliffs, beaches and vineyard country that palace-focused Sintra visitors miss. Best done with an overnight in Sintra or a car; buses are too slow for ambitious hopping.

6Mafra and Ericeira
Base · 2–3 days
Pair Mafra’s outsized palace-monastery with Ericeira’s surf-town coast for a less crowded alternative to Sintra and Cascais. This is a strong overnight stop for travelers who prefer Atlantic weather, seafood and surf culture to palace circuits.

7Almada, Cacilhas and Costa da Caparica
Take the ferry to Cacilhas for Lisbon skyline views, then head to Caparica for the region’s most accessible run of broad sandy beaches. It is suburban and busy rather than secret, especially on hot weekends, but it is a practical city beach day.

8Sesimbra and Cabo Espichel
Sesimbra is the choice for seafood, a sheltered bay and a low-key beach weekend; Cabo Espichel adds exposed cliffs and a stark pilgrimage headland. Use a car or driver if you want both properly—public transport makes the cape a slow proposition.

9Arrábida, Azeitão and Palmela
This is the region’s best landscape combination: limestone-backed coves, forested slopes, Azeitão cheese, Moscatel and Palmela Castle. It is worth building a day or two around, but only with a car, tour or deliberate taxi plan because access and parking are the real constraint.

10Setúbal
Base · 2–4 days
A working fishing city and the best south-bank base for Arrábida, Palmela and Sado estuary time. Stay for Mercado do Livramento, grilled fish, oysters and choco frito, not for a picture-perfect old town.

4 daysLisbon Historic Neighborhoods (2 days) → Sintra (1 day) → Cascais and Estoril (1 day)
The sharpest short first visit. Use Lisbon as the actual base, take the train to Sintra for two major estates at most, then do Cascais for a low-effort coast day. Do not try to force Arrábida into this trip.

7 daysLisbon Historic Neighborhoods (3 days) → Sintra (1 day) → Cascais and Estoril (1 day) → Setúbal (2 days)
For travelers who want the essential Lisbon circuit but also want one serious south-bank stretch. Keep Sintra and Cascais rail-based from Lisbon; move to Setúbal for seafood, the market and a properly planned Arrábida day rather than attempting it as a casual day trip from the capital.

10 daysLisbon Historic Neighborhoods (5 days) → Mafra and Ericeira (2 days) → Setúbal (3 days)
The best balanced longer route for travelers who want more than Lisbon’s headline sights. Use the Lisbon block for Belém, Sintra and Cascais day trips; then pick up a car for Mafra and Ericeira before settling in Setúbal for Arrábida, Azeitão, Palmela and Sesimbra. After Lisbon, this route is much better with wheels.

14 daysLisbon Historic Neighborhoods (5 days) → Sintra (2 days) → Mafra and Ericeira (3 days) → Setúbal (4 days)
For slow travelers who dislike reducing the region to day-trip checkboxes. Sleeping in Sintra lets you handle Pena early and add the Sintra Coast without a frantic return; Ericeira gives the Atlantic room to breathe; Setúbal is the right final base for Arrábida, Azeitão, Palmela, Sesimbra and serious seafood.
