Cluj-Napoca
Base · 2–3 days
The county’s essential base: a compact Gothic-and-Habsburg center with serious cafés, restaurants, bars, museums and student energy. Give it two deliberate sightseeing days; it also makes the easiest hub for Turda, Bonțida and Sic.
Turda, Salina Turda and Durgău
Short stop · 0.5–1 days
Come for Salina Turda’s immense former salt chambers and odd underground leisure complex, then add the Durgău salt lakes or a traditional lunch in town. It is the county’s most straightforward major attraction and works well in poor weather.
Cheile Turzii / Turda Gorge
Short stop · 0.5 days
A compact limestone gorge with high walls, a proper rocky trail and enough drama for a half-day outdoors. Do it as its own active outing or pair it with Turda only if you have a car and start early.
Bánffy Castle, Bonțida
Short stop · 0.5–1 days
This is an atmospheric restoration project rather than a polished palace: the partly recovered Renaissance-Baroque complex is the point. It makes a strong half-day from Cluj when there is no event closure.
Tarnița, Gilău and the Someșul Cald valley
Short stop · 0.5 days
Cluj’s closest convincing escape into water and forest, best for a paddle, boat outing or easy lakeside walk rather than resort-style beach time. The roads are winding and the useful access points are much easier with a car.
Mărișel, Beliș–Fântânele and the Cluj edge of Apuseni Natural Park
Base · 2 days
For high plateau scenery, cabins, reservoir views and actual mountain air, this is the county’s strongest upland stay. Base around Beliș or Mărișel for hiking, cycling and slower days rather than trying to cover the wider Apuseni from Cluj.
Muntele Băișorii and Valea Ierii
Short stop · 1 day
A quieter southern Apuseni option for broad-view hikes and mountain biking, with a small local ski area in winter. Treat the skiing as a snow-dependent add-on, not a standalone ski holiday.
Kalotaszeg / Țara Călatei
Base · 2 days
The villages around Mera, Mănăstireni, Sâncraiu, Huedin and Valea Drăganului offer Cluj’s best rural cultural counterweight: Hungarian-influenced architecture, food and folk traditions. It rewards a village guesthouse stay or a guide; otherwise its appeal is easy to miss.
Sic and the Transylvanian Delta
Short stop · 0.5–1 days
A former salt village north of Cluj with living dance traditions and reed-bed wetland habitat. Go for birds, landscape and village culture, preferably with a local contact or around a specific event—not for a polished attraction circuit.
Gherla–Nicula
Short stop · 1 day
A northern detour for Nicula Monastery, pilgrimage culture and the history of Romanian glass-icon painting. It is worthwhile for religious art and regional history, but not essential on a first short stay.
Compact first visit, car-free
4 daysCluj-Napoca (2 days) → Turda, Salina Turda and Durgău (1 day) → Bánffy Castle, Bonțida (1 day)
The sensible short break: two real days for Cluj’s food, museums and evening life, then two straightforward day trips. Use a tour or transfer for Turda; do not cram Turda Gorge into the same day unless you have a car and are happy to rush.

For a first proper look at the county with a rental car. Keep Cluj as the opening base, pair Bonțida with Sic and the gorge with Salina Turda, then spend two nights in the uplands instead of treating mountain roads as day-trip territory.

A car-essential second visit for travelers who prefer village culture, religious art and slow mountain time to ticking off sights. Stay in Kalotaszeg and around Beliș rather than commuting to Cluj every night; Tarnița works as a scenic transition, not a destination needing days.

4 days / 3 nightsCluj-Napoca (2 days) → Muntele Băișorii and Valea Ierii (1 day) → Turda, Salina Turda and Durgău (1 day)
Book Cluj for the reliable part—restaurants, museums and cafés—and keep the Băișoara night flexible until snow and lifts are confirmed. Salina Turda is the weather-proof final-day choice; do not build a whole ski trip around this small local hill.
