Santo António
Base · 4–7 nights
The island’s only practical service town: use it for the market, waterfront, local meals, cash and arranging drivers or guides. It is a working harbor town, not a polished colonial stop, but it makes the rest of Príncipe possible.
Bom Bom and the North Coast
Base · 1–3 nights
The easiest beach base, close to the airport and built around soft sand, calmer logistics and lodge-supported outings. Choose it when you want beach time without committing to the rougher south.
Roça Sundy and Sundy Praia
Base · 1–4 days
Come for the 1919 Eddington eclipse site, cocoa-estate history and forest-backed coast in one compact area. It is the strongest choice for travelers who want a refined lodge stay with actual historical substance.
Roça Belo Monte and Praia Banana
Short stop · 1 day
Belo Monte’s clifftop plantation setting looks down on Praia Banana, the island’s signature palm-framed beach. It is an easy, high-payoff half-day from Santo António, especially paired with Paciência.
Roça Paciência and Picão
Short stop · 1 day
A living plantation-community landscape rather than a restored hotel version of a roça. Go with a guide who can explain the church, workers’ quarters, agricultural life and the less comfortable history behind the estates.
Terreiro Velho
Short stop · 1 day
A working cocoa estate and the sensible starting point for an interior day built around cacao and rainforest. It is more useful as part of a guided active excursion than as a standalone sightseeing stop.
Oquê Pipi Waterfall and Príncipe Natural Park
Short stop · 1 day
This is where Príncipe stops being an easy beach island: a guided forest walk leads to its largest waterfall and swimming pool. Go for endemic birdlife and dense rainforest, not for a casual roadside waterfall photo.
Nova Estrela and the South Coast
Short stop · 1 day
The south delivers the island’s most dramatic combination of jungle, rocky coast and fishing-settlement views toward Boné de Jóquei. Treat it as a full-day guided circuit; rain and road conditions set the pace.
Praia Grande and Boné de Jóquei
Short stop · 1 day
Príncipe’s largest, wildest beach sits opposite the striking Boné de Jóquei islet and anchors the island’s turtle-conservation work. It is worth the rougher journey for a quiet guided turtle visit in season, not as a rushed sunset stop.
Short first visit: north coast plus one active day
5 days / 4 nightsSanto António (4 nights as the base; arrival afternoon and one slow town morning) → Roça Paciência and Picão (Half-day) → Roça Belo Monte and Praia Banana (Half-day, paired with Paciência) → Roça Sundy and Sundy Praia (1 full day) → Oquê Pipi Waterfall and Príncipe Natural Park (1 full day)
The sensible minimum for a first trip. Base in Santo António or Bom Bom, keep the north-coast days easy, then choose one proper rainforest day. Do not try to add Praia Grande as well; that is how a short Príncipe trip turns into hours in a car.
Plan this routeClassic Príncipe: beaches, roças and the south
8 days / 7 nightsSanto António (7 nights as the main base, with arrival and departure time kept light) → Roça Paciência and Picão (Half-day) → Roça Belo Monte and Praia Banana (Half-day, paired with Paciência) → Roça Sundy and Sundy Praia (1 full day) → Terreiro Velho (Half-day, combined with Oquê Pipi) → Oquê Pipi Waterfall and Príncipe Natural Park (Half-day to full day, depending on trail conditions) → Nova Estrela and the South Coast (Half-day within a full south-coast excursion) → Praia Grande and Boné de Jóquei (Half-day; add a guided evening turtle visit in season)
This is the right one-week shape: north-coast beaches and plantation history first, then two separate south/interior days. Keep one day loose for rain, a delayed boat outing or simply returning to the beach that worked best.
Plan this routeNature-led Príncipe: forest, birds and wild coast
11 days / 10 nightsSanto António (5 nights as the practical first base, including arrival, logistics and weather buffer) → Bom Bom and the North Coast (2 nights at a beach lodge, or 1 full day if staying in Santo António throughout) → Roça Paciência and Picão (Half-day) → Roça Sundy and Sundy Praia (1 full day) → Terreiro Velho (1 half-day cacao and estate visit) → Oquê Pipi Waterfall and Príncipe Natural Park (1 full day, with flexibility to move it for weather) → Nova Estrela and the South Coast (1 full day guided circuit) → Praia Grande and Boné de Jóquei (1 full day; reserve an evening turtle program in season)
For travelers who would rather wait for a usable forest or sea day than tick off beaches. The extra time matters: rain can wreck trail and boat plans, while birding, whale watching in season and turtle work all reward flexibility.
Plan this routeSlow lodge stay: beach time with enough substance
15 days / 14 nightsSanto António (7 nights as the first base, including arrival, town time and two weather-flex days) → Roça Belo Monte and Praia Banana (1 full day, with time to return for better light or swimming conditions) → Roça Paciência and Picão (Half-day, paired with Belo Monte) → Bom Bom and the North Coast (3 nights for unstructured beach time and any viable marine outing) → Roça Sundy and Sundy Praia (4 nights as the second lodge base) → Terreiro Velho (Half-day) → Oquê Pipi Waterfall and Príncipe Natural Park (1 full day) → Nova Estrela and the South Coast (Half-day within a south-coast day) → Praia Grande and Boné de Jóquei (Half-day to full day; repeat for a turtle visit if timing and conditions work)
For people who actually enjoy slow island travel and are happy to repeat a beach, wait out rain and let lodge logistics carry the trip. Fourteen nights is not for sight collectors; Príncipe does not need a different headline attraction every day.
