Southern Kruger
Base · 2–4 nights
The first-time safari core: use Skukuza, Lower Sabie, Berg-en-Dal or Crocodile Bridge camps to work varied riverine habitat without attempting huge daily distances. It is busy around famous sightings, but the road network and camp choice make it the most forgiving self-drive sector.
Sabi Sand
Base · 3 nights
The private-reserve answer to Kruger: tracker-led drives, polished lodges and consistently strong leopard viewing. Book at least two nights; one night is an expensive teaser rather than a safari.
Hazyview
Short stop · 1 night
Not charming, but arguably the province’s most useful base: close to Paul Kruger and Phabeni gates, practical for the Panorama Route, and full of accommodation and supplies. Stay nearby on an estate or farm lodge if you want less strip-development atmosphere.
Panorama Route
Base · 2 nights
Base in Graskop or Sabie for the proper escarpment circuit: waterfalls, God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and Pilgrim’s Rest. Start early, because the headline stops become crowded and mist can erase the views.
Blyde River Canyon
Short stop · 1 night
The scenic high point of the escarpment, especially around the Three Rondavels and Swadini side of the canyon. Give it its own unhurried day or overnight; combining it with every Panorama Route stop and a Kruger drive is bad planning.
Mbombela
Short stop · 1 night
Use Mpumalanga’s main Lowveld city for the airport, rental car, supermarkets and a sensible first or final night. It is infrastructure rather than a safari destination, but it is also the best base for Barberton or Kaapsehoop side trips.
Barberton
Base · 2 nights
A gold-rush town beside the Makhonjwa Mountains, one of the planet’s most important ancient geological landscapes. It rewards travelers who want winding mountain roads and real context beyond safari, preferably with a guide or some advance reading.
Kaapsehoop
Short stop · 1 night
A tiny, mist-prone escarpment settlement above Mbombela with rock formations, walks and free-roaming horses. Come for one quiet overnight and cool grassland air, not a packed sightseeing schedule.
Dullstroom
Base · 2 nights
The Highlands counterpoint to the Lowveld: trout dams, fireplaces, grassland birding and country-lodge weekends. It works as a Johannesburg break or a deliberate decompression stop, not as a Kruger day trip.
Waterval Boven
A compact Highveld stop for cliffs, rock climbing, hiking and rail-era scenery, also known as eNtokozweni. Choose it for outdoor pursuits or as a break in the Gauteng–Lowveld drive, not for a standard first itinerary.
Classic first visit
7 nightsMbombela (1 night) → Panorama Route (2 nights) → Southern Kruger (4 nights)
The sensible first-time loop: collect the car and stock up in Mbombela, give the escarpment more than a rushed day trip, then spend four nights in Kruger across two southern camps. Use Skukuza or Lower Sabie first, then move to Berg-en-Dal or Crocodile Bridge rather than driving giant distances every day.

6 nightsHazyview (1 night) → Sabi Sand (3 nights) → Southern Kruger (2 nights)
For travelers who want one properly done private safari rather than lodge-hopping. Hazyview handles arrival logistics; three nights in Sabi Sand gives enough guided drives to justify the price; two nights in Southern Kruger provide the self-drive contrast.
Plan this routeValue self-drive with Highlands and safari
9 nightsDullstroom (2 nights) → Panorama Route (2 nights) → Hazyview (1 night) → Southern Kruger (4 nights)
A strong independent-driving route for travelers who want more than animals. Dullstroom is a deliberate Highlands reset, Panorama Route gets two unhurried nights, and Hazyview prevents an awkward late transfer before four nights split between southern Kruger camps.

For repeat visitors who want geology, Highveld atmosphere and escarpment scenery alongside safari. It deliberately gives Barberton, the Panorama Route and Blyde River Canyon their own time, then finishes with both private-reserve guiding and a public-camp Kruger stay.
