Sultanahmet, Eminönü and the Historic Peninsula
Base · 2 days
The essential first-stop core for Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı, the Basilica Cistern and the bazaars. Start early: by mid-morning it becomes an outdoor museum with too many mediocre tourist restaurants.
Karaköy, Galata, Istiklal and Cihangir
Base · 1–2 days
The best all-round European-side base: walkable to the old city, connected to ferries, and far better for dinner and drinks than Sultanahmet. Stay off Istiklal itself if you want sleep; Galata's steep streets are no joke.
Beşiktaş, Ortaköy, Arnavutköy and the European Bosphorus
Base · 1–2 days
Come for Dolmabahçe, palace-era waterfront architecture and the most satisfying Bosphorus walks between Beşiktaş and Bebek. Use ferries where possible—road traffic can ruin an otherwise short outing.
Kadıköy and Moda
Short stop · 0.5–1 days
İstanbul's strongest all-round food and everyday-life district, with market streets, bars, bookshops and a good waterfront walk in Moda. It makes an excellent base for longer stays, but not for an itinerary packed with early Sultanahmet entries.
Üsküdar, Kuzguncuk, Beylerbeyi and Çengelköy
Short stop · 0.5–1 days
The quieter Asian Bosphorus shore is for ferry views, residential streets and an unhurried lunch rather than a long monument checklist. Pair compact Kuzguncuk with Üsküdar, Beylerbeyi or a ferry ride rather than treating it as a full-day destination.
The Princes’ Islands
Short stop · 1 day
Büyükada, Heybeliada, Burgazada and Kınalıada offer wooden villas, piney climbs and a real break from metropolitan pace. Go on a weekday if possible; Büyükada is service-rich but can be crowded and expensive, while Heybeliada and Burgazada are calmer.
Sarıyer, Rumeli Kavağı, Anadolu Kavağı and the Northern Bosphorus
Short stop · 1 day
This is where the Bosphorus finally feels like a strait rather than a backdrop: fishing villages, open water and the climb toward Yoros Castle near Anadolu Kavağı. Give it most of a day and take a public ferry instead of cramming it beside old-city sights.
Kilyos and Belgrad Forest
The practical northern escape for a forest walk, picnic or Black Sea beach day. Belgrad Forest is the better bet for walking; Kilyos is for sea air and beach clubs, not reliably calm swimming or friction-free transit.
Şile and Ağva
Base · 2–3 days
The Asian-side Black Sea coast is the one İstanbul escape worth an overnight: Şile has beaches and a lighthouse, while Ağva is better for riverfront hotels, kayaking and forest scenery. Treat it as a separate slow break, not a quick day-trip add-on from central İstanbul.
First İstanbul, one-base classic
6 daysKaraköy, Galata, Istiklal and Cihangir (1 day) → Sultanahmet, Eminönü and the Historic Peninsula (2 days) → Kadıköy and Moda (1 day) → Üsküdar, Kuzguncuk, Beylerbeyi and Çengelköy (1 day) → Beşiktaş, Ortaköy, Arnavutköy and the European Bosphorus (1 day)
The right first visit: sleep around Karaköy or Galata, give the old city two proper days, then use ferries for the Asian shore and the Bosphorus. It avoids the classic mistake of treating traffic-heavy cross-city journeys as quick hops.
Plan this routeFirst visit with an island day
8 daysKaraköy, Galata, Istiklal and Cihangir (1 day) → Sultanahmet, Eminönü and the Historic Peninsula (2 days) → Kadıköy and Moda (1 day) → Üsküdar, Kuzguncuk, Beylerbeyi and Çengelköy (1 day) → The Princes’ Islands (1 day) → Beşiktaş, Ortaköy, Arnavutköy and the European Bosphorus (2 days)
For travelers who want the monuments without racing through them, plus a weekday island escape. Keep one Bosphorus day loose for a public ferry north or for a slower waterfront walk from Beşiktaş toward Bebek.
Plan this routeİstanbul and the Black Sea coast
10-11 daysKaraköy, Galata, Istiklal and Cihangir (2 days) → Sultanahmet, Eminönü and the Historic Peninsula (2 days) → Kadıköy and Moda (1 day) → Üsküdar, Kuzguncuk, Beylerbeyi and Çengelköy (1 day) → The Princes’ Islands (1 day) → Sarıyer, Rumeli Kavağı, Anadolu Kavağı and the Northern Bosphorus (1 day) → Şile and Ağva (2-3 days)
A slower regional trip for summer or early autumn. Central İstanbul still gets a full week, while Şile and Ağva get the overnight time they require; do not attempt the Black Sea coast as a rushed central-city day trip.
Plan this routeWinter long weekend
4 daysSultanahmet, Eminönü and the Historic Peninsula (2 days) → Karaköy, Galata, Istiklal and Cihangir (1 day) → Kadıköy and Moda (Half day) → Üsküdar, Kuzguncuk, Beylerbeyi and Çengelköy (Half day)
Built for short daylight and unreliable weather: prioritize cisterns, palaces, museums, bazaars and long meals, then take one ferry-led Asian-side afternoon if conditions are calm. Skip the islands and Black Sea coast.
