Getting around
There is no metro. Orlando is a car-oriented region with a modest Lynx bus network and SunRail commuter service that is useful only for a narrow set of weekday-oriented trips, not for a theme-park itinerary. Downtown and Winter Park are pleasant on foot within their compact cores; International Drive, Universal, SeaWorld and Disney are not meaningfully walkable between one another. Rideshare is practical for occasional hops but surge pricing after park closing is real; rental cars give freedom for day trips but bring tolls, parking fees, aggressive driving and I-4 congestion. Do not assume a hotel described as ‘near Disney’ is walkable to a park, and do not plan to drive across town at park-closing time if you can avoid it.
When to go
Late February through April is the best balance of bearable weather and relatively dry days, though spring-break crowds raise prices and park waits. Summer is brutally hot and humid, with near-daily afternoon thunderstorms from June onward; hurricane season runs June through November, so build flexibility into any September–October trip. Thanksgiving week, Christmas through New Year, school holidays and major convention periods can make hotels, roads and parks disproportionately expensive and crowded; winter is milder but occasional cold fronts happen.
Book before you land
Discovery Cove — capacity is limited to about 1,000 guests a day; reserve as soon as dates are fixed, especially for school holidays. · Walt Disney World park tickets and any separately ticketed seasonal or after-hours event — buy before arrival for peak dates and confirm any date-based reservation requirements in force for your ticket type. · Universal Orlando admission, particularly peak-date tickets and special events such as Halloween Horror Nights — pre-buy once dates are set rather than gambling on day-of availability or gate prices. · Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex add-ons and any timed special experience — reserve ahead if a specific program matters; general entry is less of a sell-out risk than Discovery Cove. · Popular character meals, high-demand Disney dining and special tours — book when the relevant booking window opens if they are central to the trip.
Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, Cape CanaveralFull day; allow about 1–1.5 hours each way by car from central Orlando, longer from Disney in traffic.
This is the one day trip that genuinely competes with another park day: real launch history, giant hardware and a setting Orlando cannot duplicate. Check launch schedules, but do not build the day around one unless you accept postponements.

Wekiwa Springs State ParkHalf to full day; roughly 45–70 minutes each way by car from the resort corridor.
A sharp reset from rides and asphalt: spring swimming, paddling and short nature trails within reach of town. Go early; warm-weather capacity and parking can become the limiting factor.

Cocoa Beach and the Space CoastFull day; about 1–1.5 hours each way by car, plus beach traffic and parking.
It is the closest straightforward Atlantic-beach escape, and pairs naturally with Cape Canaveral if you do not mind a long day. The beach is not pristine wilderness, but it beats spending an unplanned extra day on International Drive.

Bok Tower Gardens, Lake WalesFull day or long half day; around 1–1.5 hours each way by car from Orlando, often longer from the northern suburbs.
Choose this over another retail-and-resort day for designed gardens, the Singing Tower and a quieter version of Central Florida. It is a paid attraction, but the landscape is the point.

Canaveral National SeashoreFull day; roughly 1.5–2 hours each way by car depending on which access point you use.
For undeveloped shoreline, wildlife and a sense of Florida before the resorts, it is far more rewarding than a generic tourist beach. Facilities are limited, and this is a weather-dependent outdoors day.
