Detroit
Base · 2–3 days
Michigan’s essential city stop for Motown, the Detroit Institute of Arts, Rivera Court, architecture, sports and the RiverWalk. Base here for Dearborn’s Henry Ford complex and some of the country’s best Middle Eastern food.
Traverse City
Base · 2–3 days
The most useful northern Michigan base: a lively bayfront town surrounded by cherry country, wineries, cideries and good restaurants. It is the right place to sleep for Old Mission, Leelanau and a day at Sleeping Bear.
Sleeping Bear Dunes
Short stop · 1 day
Michigan’s standout Lower Peninsula landscape: steep Lake Michigan bluffs, immense dunes, beaches and the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive. Go early in summer; the headline overlooks and parking areas fill fast.
Mackinac Island and the Straits
Base · 1–2 days
A genuinely distinct car-free stop of bikes, horses, Victorian hotels, Fort Mackinac and limestone shoreline. Stay on the island or near the ferry in Mackinaw City or St. Ignace rather than wasting a long day-trip from Traverse City.
Munising and Pictured Rocks
Base · 2 days
Come for Lake Superior sandstone cliffs, sea caves, waterfalls and the boat-or-kayak view of Pictured Rocks. Munising is a practical base, not a destination in itself, so build the trip around weather-flexible cruise and hiking days.
Marquette
Base · 2 days
The U.P.’s best small-city base, with Lake Superior beaches, Presque Isle, Black Rocks, breweries and enough restaurants to avoid motel-town fatigue. Choose it for a mix of nature and town life, not as the closest base for Pictured Rocks.
Grand Rapids, Holland and the Lake Michigan coast
Base · 2 days
This is the efficient west Michigan pairing: Grand Rapids for breweries and city energy, Holland and Saugatuck for dunes, beaches and sunset. It works well as a compact Chicago or Detroit extension, though summer lake towns can be crowded and generic.
Ann Arbor
Short stop · 1 day
A compact university town with campus architecture, bookstores, Kerrytown, strong international food and more walkable street life than most Michigan towns. It is an easy Detroit add-on, but football weekends make it absurdly expensive.
Keweenaw Peninsula
Base · 3 days
Michigan’s serious remote-road-trip country: Houghton for services and Copper Harbor for an end-of-the-road Lake Superior escape, mining history, dark skies and mountain biking. Give it dedicated time; it is not a sensible add-on after Pictured Rocks.
Isle Royale National Park
Base · 3–4 days
A roadless Lake Superior wilderness for backpacking, paddling and wildlife rather than casual sightseeing. Treat transport from Houghton and several nights on or around the island as the trip itself, not a day excursion.
Detroit and Ann Arbor without a car
4 daysDetroit (3 days) → Ann Arbor (1 day)
The cleanest short Michigan trip if you do not want a rental car. Put the serious time into Detroit’s museums, music history, riverfront and Dearborn food, then use Ann Arbor as a compact campus-and-bookstore finale rather than pretending it needs a long stay.
Plan this routeClassic northern Michigan first visit
8 daysDetroit (2 days) → Traverse City (3 days) → Mackinac Island and the Straits (1 day) → Munising and Pictured Rocks (2 days)
The strongest first-time road trip: Detroit for culture, Traverse City for food, wine and Sleeping Bear, Mackinac for the signature island experience, then Pictured Rocks for Lake Superior drama. It is full but workable; book the Pictured Rocks boat trip for the first good-weather day.
Plan this routeWest Michigan beaches, breweries and dune country
7 daysDetroit (2 days) → Grand Rapids, Holland and the Lake Michigan coast (2 days) → Traverse City (2 days) → Sleeping Bear Dunes (1 day)
A Lower Peninsula route for travelers who want cities, good eating and Lake Michigan rather than a long U.P. drive. Grand Rapids is the sensible west-coast base; Traverse City handles the northern food-and-wine portion; Sleeping Bear gets a dedicated early-start day instead of being rushed between tastings.
Plan this routeUpper Peninsula and Keweenaw commitment
11-13 daysMackinac Island and the Straits (1-2 days) → Munising and Pictured Rocks (2 days) → Marquette (2 days) → Keweenaw Peninsula (3 days) → Isle Royale National Park (3-4 days)
For repeat visitors who want Superior country, not a checkbox Michigan loop. The Keweenaw and Isle Royale need real time and weather slack; if the island ferry or seaplane logistics feel too rigid, skip Isle Royale and give those days to Copper Harbor and the Keweenaw instead.
